The
Safilo eyewear company was founded way back in 1934 by Guglielmo Tabacchi when he procured a lenses and frames manufacturing facility in Calalzo di Cadore to produce quality eyewear for the European markets, spearheading Safilo eye wear into a market leader in Italy and Europe. Rapid expansion that followed suit over the next few decades saw new Safilo manufacturing plants being opened to handle the increased volume in production. These included a new plant in Venice put up in 1964 to handle cellulose acetate frames production and the acquisition of the Padua Service Center in 1973. In 1977 onwards, various Safilo overseas offices were opened across Europe. Later on in 1983, foreseeing increased demands for designer eyewear, Safilo obtained licenses to produce eyewear of well-known designer brands. More designer labels were added to the list in the 1990s when names such Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Valentino and Georgio Armani were signed up. Since then this company has enjoyed continuous growth through the acquisitions of companies including distributors of
Safilo eye glasses, Smith Sports Optics, Safilens and Outlook Eyewear.
